- Nucleotide (Entrez)
The Nucleotide database is a collection of sequences from several sources, including GenBank, RefSeq, TPA and PDB. Genome, gene and transcript sequence data provide the foundation for biomedical research and discovery.
- Protein (Entrez)
The Protein database is a collection of sequences from several sources, including translations from annotated coding regions in GenBank, RefSeq and TPA, as well as records from SwissProt, PIR, PRF, and PDB. Protein sequences are the fundamental determinants of biological structure and function.
- Gene (Entrez)
Gene supplies gene-specific connections in the nexus of map, sequence, expression, structure, function, citation, and homology data. Unique identifiers are assigned to genes with defining sequences, genes with known map positions, and genes inferred from phenotypic information. These gene identifiers are used throughout NCBI's databases and tracked through updates of annotation.
- Structure (Entrez)
Molecular Modeling Database (MMDB). The Molecular Modeling DataBase (MMDB), also known as "Entrez Structure," is a database of experimentally determined structures obtained from the RCSB Protein Data Bank (PDB). MMDB is developed by the Structure Group of the NCBI Computational Biology Branch.
- BLAST - Basic Local Alignment Search Tool
The Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) finds regions of local similarity between sequences. The program compares nucleotide or protein sequences to sequence databases and calculates the statistical significance of matches. BLAST can be used to infer functional and evolutionary relationships between sequences as well as help identify members of gene families.
- Taxonomy (Entrez)
The Taxonomy Database is a curated classification and nomenclature for all of the organisms in the public sequence databases. This currently represents about 10% of the described species of life on the planet.
- MEDLINE (EBSCO)
This is the EBSCOHost version of Medline. EBSCOHost's search system allows the searcher to do very precise keyword searches, but requires a familiarity with Boolean, Proximity, and Truncation Operations; as well as a logical approach to developing search strategies. PubMed is the NLM version of Medline in addition to miscellaneous other journal content. If you use PubMed regularly you should set up a My NCBI account and take advantage of the ability to customize "filters."
- Web of Science
Web of Science is a multidisciplinary database that covers the literature of the basic, applied, and social sciences. Coverage includes biomedicine and all areas of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, agriculture, medical research, sociology, psychology, and others. Coverage is broad but is limited to the 'significant' journals in each discipline. WoS provides CITATION SEARCH functions which complement traditional keyword approaches to searching.
Chem Abstracts and related databases. SciFinder provides databases for articles and patents, substances, and reactions. You need to register for an individual account.
